I once heard David Sedaris, a well-known humorist, describe his childhood cat as “drowsy and secretive.” This made me laugh out loud because it struck me as both a very funny and extremely accurate way to describe many cats, Elijah being one. I’m pretty sure Elijah is awake the absolute minimum he has to be in order to still sustain life. Few things will rouse him, other than food and gentle affection from people. When he is awake, however, you’ll know it by the rumbles of his purrs. He’s a sweet, roly-poly boy, who loves, well, everyone.

Elijah is getting up there in years, and I have no doubt he’s seen a lot in his time. Tabby’s Place is at least the fourth place Elijah has called home. Yet despite all the upset he’s experienced (moving from shelter to home to shelter and meeting new, strange people at every turn), he seems to be quite at peace and open to love. How are Elijah and so many other animals able to forgive after so much heartache, love again, and make it all look easy? Elijah hasn’t shared this secret with me, but I do know he remains hopeful that there’s a forever home out there for him. I expect that this gentle giant’s happy ending is just around the corner.
